Dental Implants Q & A

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

Missing teeth can make it hard to feel good about your smile. Many people pursue tooth restoration to bring back their confidence and improve their interactions with others.

Your teeth also play an important role in cutting and processing food. When there are teeth missing, you may not be able to chew effectively. Your teeth also shift when one or more teeth are missing, which can leave them vulnerable to damage or loss, worsening the problem.

Finally, your teeth are anchored into your jaw bone. Every time you bite down, you are sending pressure to that bone tissue, which stimulates it and keeps it healthy and strong. When you are missing teeth, that stimulation stops, and a process known as bone resorption, or bone loss, occurs. Over time, bone loss can lead to even more lost teeth.

What is the process for getting dental implants?

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacement options, and are anchored directly into your jaw bone. During your initial appointment, Dr. Mahoney examines your teeth to determine if there are any decay or restoration issues that should be addressed.

He may take impressions or digital images of your teeth and gums. Those images are sent to the dental lab to guide the crafting of your implant crown.

During the first placement appointment, Dr. Mahoney carefully cuts your gum tissue to allow access to your jaw bone. He drills a pilot hole into the bone, then places the dental implant deep into your bone tissue before closing the gum opening.

The next step is a healing process to allow your bone tissue to grow around the implant. Some people heal more quickly than others, so this could range from 3-6 months or longer, depending on how your body responds to the procedure. Once complete, an abutment is placed onto the implant.

Finally, you return to have your custom crown placed onto the abutment, and Dr. Mahoney ensures an ideal fit. You may be asked to return for a follow-up appointment to make sure that your gum tissue is healing around the implant.

What are mini implants?

Mini implants are dental implants that secure a fixed denture. They usually only require four implants, and are strong enough to secure a full set up upper and lower dentures.

Mini implants are a good fit for men and women who have suffered bone loss, or who want a more affordable tooth replacement option than traditional dental implants.

Mini implants are placed into an area of your bone tissue that has few or no nerve endings, so the procedure does not cause the same discomfort as traditional implants. Healing times are also swifter.

Once the implants are in place, your customized dentures can be snapped onto the small, ball-shaped posts that extend from your gum tissue. That provides a secure denture that looks and acts like natural teeth.
